3:7
Beloved, hear me on this carefully.
There is a moment in Zechariah 3 that I want you to see with new eyes. Joshua the high priest is standing before the angel of the Lord. He is not standing there in the rich robes of his office. He is not standing there in the priestly garment Moses had ordained for the men of his line. He is standing there clothed with filthy garments. The man called to lead Jerusalem out of exile is wearing the very iniquity of the land he is supposed to deliver. And Satan is right next to him, accusing him, pointing at the filth, making the case that the priest is disqualified, building the legal argument that the territory cannot be possessed because the deliverer is dirty.
Sit with that scene for a moment, friend. Because if you do not see yourself in it somewhere, you have not been honest. Many readers of this book have been standing in that exact courtroom. Called to a territory, but standing in inherited filth. Carrying iniquity that did not even originate with you, the iniquity of your family line, the iniquity of your nation's history, the iniquity of the religious office you stepped into, the iniquity of the marketplace you were planted in, and the enemy has been using that inherited garment to accuse you and stall your commission.
But watch what the Lord does in that courtroom. He does not enter into negotiation with the accuser. He does not weigh up the legal case. He cuts the conversation in half with five words, "The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan" (Zechariah 3:2). And then He turns to the angels standing before Him and gives an order, "Take away the filthy garments from him." And then, beloved, the order that changes everything, "I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment" (Zechariah 3:4). The garment comes off. The fresh raiment goes on. The fair mitre is set on his head. And the commission is released, thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts (Zechariah 3:7).
This chapter is about the fire that does that. The fire that removes inherited iniquity, restores identity, and reconnects you to the assignment your line has been carrying for generations. Because, beloved, you cannot possess what you are still wearing.
The fire removes, reconnects, and recommissions.
And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.
And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.
Watch this carefully, beloved. The filthy garment in Zechariah 3 was not just the personal sin of Joshua the priest. If it had been only personal sin, the rebuke would have read differently, the Lord rebuke thee, O Joshua. But the rebuke goes to Satan. "The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan", because Satan was the one exploiting the filth, not the one who deposited it. So where did the filth come from? It came from the iniquity Joshua had inherited. Iniquity is the accumulation of sin, the build-up over generations, the residue of a land's history, the unsettled accounts of a people. Joshua had inherited the priestly office from a line that had carried Israel's accumulated iniquity for centuries. He was wearing the dirty laundry of every priest who had served before him. The exile of Babylon had not just been a personal correction; it had been a territorial reckoning. And when the remnant came back to rebuild Jerusalem, the iniquity of the land came back with them.
Hear me, beloved. Iniquity killed the men that came out of the land of Egypt, Numbers 14, they could not enter the Promised Land because the iniquity of their generation was unaddressed. But grace kept Joshua alive. Grace had brought him to the courtroom of Zechariah 3. Grace had pulled him out of the fire of Babylon, is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? (Zechariah 3:2). The Lord's first language for Joshua was not defendant. The Lord's first language for Joshua was brand, a half-burned stick the Lord Himself had reached into the flames to rescue. The identity was already set, even while the filthy garment was still on him.
And friend, this is the part I want you to internalise. The Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee. Why did the Lord identify Himself in that rebuke as the One who has chosen Jerusalem? Because the accusation against Joshua was an accusation against Jerusalem. Joshua was the priestly representative of the city. To accuse Joshua was to accuse the territory. To rebuke the accuser of Joshua was to rebuke the accuser of Jerusalem. The deliverer carries the legal status of the territory he is commissioned to.
Beloved, are you hearing this? When the enemy accuses you, he is often not accusing you only. He is accusing the territory you have been commissioned to deliver. He is trying to hold up your filthy garment as proof that the city you have been assigned to cannot be repossessed. He wants the brand to stay in the fire so the city stays in the dark. And the Lord rebukes him, for the sake of the territory. You are not just a brand plucked out. You are a brand plucked out for Jerusalem.
And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.
And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by.
Beloved, watch the sequence in Zechariah 3:4 carefully. The Lord does not say, Joshua, get yourself cleaner garments and come back to Me when you are ready. The Lord says to those that stood before him, to the ministering angels of the heavenly court, take away the filthy garments from him. Joshua does not take them off himself. They are taken off him. The deliverer is the one who receives the removal. The believer's role is to stand in the courtroom. The angels' role is to strip the filth. The Lord's role is to speak the iniquity passed.
This is freeing, friend. Many of us have been trying to self-cleanse inherited iniquity for years. We have been working harder, behaving better, fasting longer, hoping the residue of our family line and our nation's history will lift off through our personal performance. It does not work. You cannot wash off inherited iniquity by personal effort. You can only stand in the courtroom and let the heavenly attendants remove what you did not put on. Personal sin you repent of. Inherited iniquity is taken off you by decree of the One who chose you.
And then notice the next line, I will clothe thee with change of raiment. The Lord does not leave Joshua naked between garments. The moment the filth comes off, the fresh raiment goes on. There is no transitional moment where the priest is exposed. He moves directly from filthy to clothed, because heaven does not strip without re-dressing. The believer does not become an unprotected target the instant the inherited iniquity comes off. The change of raiment is immediate. The covering does not pause.
And then the crowning detail, let them set a fair mitre upon his head. The mitre, beloved, was the priestly headpiece, the symbol of consecrated office. By placing the mitre, the Lord is doing more than cleaning Joshua up. He is restoring the office. The headpiece announces, this man is who he has always been called to be. The accusation that he was disqualified is reversed. The territory's representative is re-credentialed. Heaven puts the priestly emblem back where it belongs.
Beloved, you cannot possess what you are still wearing. That is the central law of this chapter. As long as the filthy garment is on you, the enemy has a visual exhibit in the courtroom. As long as the inherited iniquity is unrebuked, the territory cannot be repossessed in its fullness. But the moment the garment comes off, the moment the change of raiment is decreed, the moment the fair mitre is set, the case for the territory is reopened, and this time it ends in the deliverer's favour.
Beloved, let me give you the three functions of the fire of the Holy Ghost in this Zechariah 3 transaction. Because the fire is not generic. The fire does specific work. And when you understand the work, you can cooperate with it.
One, fire removes the accusation. "The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan." The first act of the fire is judicial. It silences the accuser by the authority of heaven, not by your debate skills. Friend, you cannot out-argue the accuser. You have not yet been good enough long enough to silence his case. But the Lord can rebuke him, and when the Lord rebukes the accuser, the accusation is legally finished in the heavenly court. The fire is the rebuke arriving on the scene. The fire does not negotiate with the accuser. The fire terminates the accuser's standing in your case. The accuser of the brethren is cast down (Revelation 12:10), that is the fire's first work.
Two, fire restores the identity. "Set a fair mitre upon his head." The second act of the fire is identity-work. It puts the priestly headpiece back where it belongs. It reminds you who you have been called to be all along. Beloved, the long years of standing in filthy garments have spoken false names over many of you. Defective. Disqualified. Damaged. Demoted. The fire burns those names off. The fire writes the real name back over your head. Brand plucked out of the fire. Priest of the Lord. Branch of the Lord. Vessel of the Holy Ghost. That, friend, is who you are. The fire reminds heaven and reminds hell and reminds you.
Three, fire releases the commission. "If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts" (Zechariah 3:7). The third act of the fire is deployment. Once the accusation has been silenced and the identity has been restored, the fire pushes the deliverer back into the territory with renewed authority. Judge my house. Keep my courts. That is not language of recovery. That is language of administration. Joshua is not just brought back to baseline. He is promoted into governmental authority over the territory. The fire reconnects him not just to peace, but to purpose.
Hear me, beloved, you do not possess land by fighting harder. You possess it by burning cleaner. The fire of the Holy Ghost in Zechariah 3 does what no amount of striving can do. It dismantles the legal hold of the accuser, re-credentials the deliverer, and releases the deliverer into governmental administration of the territory. That is what the fire is for. That is why you have been asking for more fire and feeling like the fire keeps coming. He is doing this work in you.
Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.
In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing.
Beloved, hold these four verses together for a moment. In Zechariah 3:8, the Lord prophesies that He will bring forth His servant the Branch. In Isaiah 4:2, the Branch is described as beautiful and glorious. In Isaiah 11:1, the Branch grows out of the stem of Jesse, Messianic, prophetic, the One who is to come. And in John 15:5, the Lord Jesus picks up the same word, I am the vine, ye are the branches, and applies the imagery to every believer who abides in Him.
Watch what is happening. The Branch in its highest sense is Jesus Himself, the Messianic Branch out of Jesse's stem. But the imagery extends downward to every believer attached to the Vine. When you abide in Jesus, you become a branch of the Branch, not Messianic in Jesus' unique sense, but participating in Jesus' Branch-ness. You become a carrier of His sap, His life, His fruit, His representation in the land. The fire that reconnected Joshua reconnected him not to a generic priesthood, but to Branch-life, to the prophetic flow of Jesus through him into the territory.
Friend, the fire reconnects you to the Vine. That is what the fire is doing. The fire is not just removing filth, it is restoring sap-flow. It is taking a branch that had been wilting under the weight of inherited iniquity, cleaning it, and re-attaching it to the Vine so that fruit can rise through it again into the territory it has been assigned to.
And look at the language Isaiah uses for the Branch, beautiful and glorious. The branch that has been reconnected is not a worn-out, embarrassed branch. It is glorious. Beloved, the believer who has come through Zechariah 3, the believer who has had the filthy garment removed, the fair mitre set, the commission released, the fire fallen, is not a small, apologetic believer. That believer is beautiful and glorious in the land. The territory marvels at them. The accusers cannot stand near them. The fruit they bear is excellent and comely.
Some of you have been hiding because you remember the filthy garment. Hear me, the garment is gone. The mitre is on. The fire has come. You are the branch of the Lord for your territory. Stop walking like a discount-branch. Walk like a glorious one. Beautiful and bearing fruit and seen by the land.
And the angel of the LORD protested unto Joshua, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.
Beloved, look at Zechariah 3:7 again. Places to walk among these that stand by. Watch that line. After the iniquity has been removed and the mitre set, the Lord promises Joshua access to a new circle, places to walk among these that stand by. The angels in the courtroom. The heavenly attendants. The cloud of witnesses. Joshua is brought into the company of heavenly beings as a co-worker, not as a defendant. That is what reconnection does. It brings you into rooms you had no business being in while the filthy garment was still on you.
This is the season of exploits, friend. Joshua entered into a season of exploits because of the reconnection. He was the high priest who led the building of the second temple. He stood with Zerubbabel. He represented Israel through the prophetic ministries of Haggai and Zechariah. He governed the post-exilic restoration of an entire nation. And it all began in that courtroom moment, when the filthy garment came off, the mitre went on, and the fire fell.
Beloved, your season of exploits is downstream of your reconnection. You do not need to manufacture the exploits. You need to receive the fire. The fire is the fuel of the exploits. The reconnection is the prerequisite of the assignment. When Joshua was reconnected back to God's fire, he entered exploits. When you are reconnected, you will enter yours.
So hear me on this, friend. Stop trying to skip Zechariah 3 to get to Joshua-the-builder. Stop trying to perform exploits while the filthy garment is still on you. Stand in the courtroom. Let the angels strip the filth. Let the Lord speak your iniquity passed. Let the mitre be set. Let the fire fall. And then walk, into the places among those that stand by, into the assignment that has been waiting for you, into the territory the Branch of the Lord is reconnecting you to administer.
Father, in the name of Jesus, I stand in the courtroom of Zechariah 3. The filthy garments are on me, inherited iniquity from my family line, from my nation's history, from the offices I have stepped into, from the territory I have been planted in. I am not asking You to overlook them. I am asking You to remove them.
The Lord that has chosen my Jerusalem, rebuke the accuser. Silence every voice that has been holding up my filthy garment as exhibit against my commission. Take away the filthy garments from me, Lord. Clothe me with change of raiment. Set a fair mitre upon my head. Restore my identity. Restore my office. Restore my place in the land.
Holy Ghost, burn through me. Remove every accusation. Restore my identity as the brand plucked out of the fire, the branch of the Lord, the priest of Your house. Release my commission. Let me judge Your house and keep Your courts. Give me places to walk among the heavenly attendants of Your presence. Reconnect me to the Vine so the sap flows again. Let the Branch-life of Jesus rise in me beautiful and glorious for my territory.
Beloved, do not move on from this chapter quickly. Take twenty minutes today and stand, literally stand, on your feet, and pray Zechariah 3:2-5 over your life and over the land you carry. Name the inherited iniquity. Speak the rebuke of the Lord against the accuser. Decree the removal of the filthy garment. Receive the change of raiment. Set the fair mitre by faith. Then walk into your week as a reconnected one. And friend, mark the day. Write down the date you stood in that courtroom and let the fire fall. Because the day Joshua's filthy garment came off was the day the temple-building began. The day your filthy garment comes off may very well be the day your real assignment finally begins.
You cannot possess what you are still wearing. Let the fire remove it. Take your land.
